The C40-MMC Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration

Our changing climate is a crisis. The migration it causes doesn’t need to be. Mayors know that investing in urban climate adaptation isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do.

The Mayors Migration Council and C40 Cities—two global coalitions at the forefront of building practical knowledge and political momentum around climate migration—teamed up in June 2021 to bring together a group of leading mayors from around the world and accelerate local, national, and international responses to issues at the intersection of the climate crisis and migration in cities.

The climate crisis and its impacts are increasingly driving vulnerable communities to search for safety and better livelihoods in cities. But as international and national actors spend time speaking about climate migration, global mayors are focused on action.

The Global Mayors Action Agenda on Climate and Migration

During the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the C40-MMC Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration released a mayor-led Action Agenda on Climate and Migration. The agenda includes specific measures, already being delivered in many cities around the world, which must become the ‘new normal’ to deliver inclusive climate action that protects people most affected by climate displacement and includes them in a green and just transition.
